Jerry '77 and Cheryl Hicks

By Jerry Hicks

Jerry and Cheryl Hicks created a lasting legacy at Hardin-Simmons to benefit future first-generation college students.

As a first generation college graduate, I believe that education is one of the best ways a person can change their life and achieve financial security. Through hard work, I was able to earn an accounting degree at Hardin-Simmons. It wasn't easy, but it was well worth the effort and provided the foundation for the success I've had in my career.

While my lovely wife attended college elsewhere, she joins me fully in supporting Hardin-Simmons. We had been giving to HSU for many years when we decided to take our giving a step further, establishing an endowed scholarship in 2011. In doing so, we chose specifically to help other first-generation college students. Having been there, I know how difficult it can be. We honored my parents in the naming of our scholarship, because they gave me great guidance and a stable home environment that has helped me throughout my life.

While we want to help students financially, we also desire to encourage them through our scholarship. Because our scholarship is endowed, we know that years after we are gone, we will still impact students. We feel blessed that we can make a difference for others.
