Sharing the Blessings
Julie (Joiner) Hammer ’94 is known by her love for the Lord and her heart for children. Julie has served as the minister of childhood education at FBC Stephenville, Columbus Avenue Baptist Church in Waco, and currently serves in that role at First Baptist Church of Lewisville.
Julie was recently on campus to receive the Distinguished Alumni Award during Homecoming 2019, and her face was full of smiles as she recalled her HSU student days. She was positively challenged in her course work and chose multiple opportunities for involvement in student life. She says, “God richly blessed me through Hardin-Simmons University. In light of these blessings, I now have a strong sense of responsibility to give to others what I was given, and to maintain ties to HSU.”
In the years since graduation, Julie has made a point to represent her university well and proactively. She points potential students to Hardin-Simmons, connects students with faculty and staff, recommends students for admission and scholarships, and helps make prospective students aware of preview weekends.
Julie has stayed connected with HSU through service on the Alumni Association Board of Directors and as a Board of Young Associates member. “Being a part of these boards has made me realize that stronger alumni ties mean Hardin-Simmons is stronger as a whole.”
She has also sought to give back financially as she’s been able. “The primary reason I was able to attend Hardin-Simmons was scholarships, and I hope to help other students in this way as well.”
Julie graduated with her Bachelor of Behavioral Science in Interdisciplinary Studies from Hardin-Simmons University in 1994. In 1997, she received her Master of Arts in Religious Education from Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary. During her career serving families in the local church, she has written vacation Bible school and Sunday school curriculum for the Baptist General Convention of Texas’ Baptist Way Press, led the organization’s annual Childhood Ministry Summit, overseen the building of brand new children’s ministry space at FBC Lewisville, and served as a supervisor in the Baylor Ministry Guidance Program.
Julie is married to Clint Hammer, director of the field service team for Strom Aviation. They have two sons, Caleb and Micah, who are excited to get back on campus again soon.
“It is a joy to give to others and share the many blessings I’ve received from HSU. My story isn’t a story about me at all. It’s a story of God’s faithfulness to guide, provide, equip, and bless. I’m so thankful.”
